When To Consider Genetic Testing

When you’re unsure of the inherited risk for different diseases or conditions, genetic testing can help provide a more comprehensive look at your overall risk. At Stamford Health, genetic counseling is provided by a team that includes genetic counselors and doctors who specialize in the field of genetics. The team provides testing options, reviews genetic test results with individuals and families, and supports them in making decisions based on those results.

Stamford Health’s team include both genetic counselors, who are board-certified in genetics and counseling to provide medical and emotional support, and clinical geneticists, who are board-certified in both obstetrics and gynecology and medical genetics.

Our genetic experts will collaborate with your primary care provider and referring doctors to determine the most appropriate next steps for you.

When To Pursue Genetic Counseling

There is no wrong time to visit a genetic counselor. When thinking about parenthood or after becoming pregnant, you can benefit from genetic counseling at any point in the journey. The genetics team can help you understand your personal and familial risk for an inherited condition — so you can make informed choices.

If you’re concerned or believe you’re at risk for a certain cancer because a family member has had it, our team will provide genetic counseling and conduct a thorough family and medical history. They will also answer any questions you have, review the benefits and drawbacks of genetic testing, and discuss insurance considerations.

Genetic Tests & Screening Offered

Your insurance may cover all or part of the cost of your consultation since it’s a medical visit. We also offer affordable payment plans.

  • If you’re beginning your journey into parenthood, you may schedule an appointment with a genetic counselor to determine the risk for genetic conditions or birth defects. Stamford Health offers a wide variety of tests, including preconception carrier screening, which reveals whether you or your partner carry a genetic change that may increase the risk for your fetus to be affected, and other screening tests for certain disorders.
  • If you are already pregnant, a genetic counselor will discuss screening and diagnostic tests with you. We offer cell-free DNA aneuploidy screening as well as diagnostic testing such as chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and amniocentesis with chromosomal microarray and whole exome sequencing.
  • If you want to determine your cancer risk, the genetics team at Stamford Health’s Women’s Specialty Center can offer genetic testing and then work with cancer experts in the Carl & Dorothy Bennett Cancer Center to customize a care plan that meets your needs. Through this multidisciplinary team’s experience, skill, and compassion, you will have access to the best cancer screening and treatment options available.

Genetic Counseling FAQs

  • What is reproductive genetic counseling and when is it recommended?
Reproductive genetic counseling offers guidance and support to individuals or couples who are planning a family or expecting a child. It is recommended when there is a family history of a genetic condition, concern about inherited disease, a previously affected pregnancy, or other risk factors. A genetic counselor will assess these risks and provide information to help you make informed reproductive decisions.
  • What genetic conditions or concerns can be addressed through this counseling service?
Genetic counseling at Stamford Health addresses various genetic conditions. Our services encompass a range of genetic testing options, including carrier screening and prenatal testing to assess chromosomal abnormalities. Additionally, we can provide guidance on postnatal genetic testing if needed to assess a child’s health or diagnose genetic conditions after birth. Our genetic counselors are dedicated to tailoring testing to your specific needs and concerns.
  • What can I expect during a genetic counseling session at Stamford Health?
During a genetic counseling session, you can expect a compassionate and confidential environment. Our experienced genetic counselors will take a detailed family and medical history, assess your specific concerns, and discuss available genetic testing options. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance tailored to your unique situation.
  • What happens if a genetic risk is identified during counseling, and what are the next steps?
If a genetic risk is identified during counseling, your genetic counselor will discuss the implications and the available options. This may include further genetic testing, exploring reproductive choices, or seeking additional medical care. The next steps will be based on your preferences, values, and the specific genetic risk identified.
  • Is genetic counseling covered by insurance, and what are the associated costs?

The coverage of genetic counseling by insurance can vary. Many insurance plans do cover genetic counseling when it is medically necessary. It’s essential to check with your insurance provider to determine your coverage. Our team at Stamford Health will work with you to navigate insurance considerations and provide transparency regarding any associated costs.

At Stamford Health’s Women's Specialty Center, our genetic counseling services are designed to empower you with information and support, ensuring you make the best decisions for your reproductive health and family planning.
