What Does it Mean to Have a PFO or ASD?

PFO and ASD are congenital heart defects, meaning you were born with them. They happen when there is an opening or "hole" between the two upper chambers of the heart.

  • In an ASD, the hole is larger than in a PFO.
  • Both PFO and ASD occur in about a quarter of the general population.
  • For most people, these heart defects cause no harmful effects. However, they may increase your risk of having heart rhythm disorders, stroke, or heart failure.

Diagnosis & Treatment of PFO and ASD
We diagnose PFO and ASD using an Echocardiogram (echo).

An echocardiogram (echo) is an ultrasound of the heart that checks blood flow across the valves and chambers.
