STAMFORD, CT, May 6, 2021 – Today, during National Nurses Week, Stamford Health announced it has once again been designated ANCC Magnet Recognition® status, one of the most prestigious forms of recognition a hospital can receive for nursing excellence. Stamford Hospital is among 7% nationwide and 1 of 7 in the state of Connecticut to have achieved this honor. The accreditation will be in effect for four years.
The application and redesignation process began last April at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Connecticut. Nearly a year later in February, Magnet appraisers conducted a virtual site visit due to circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and conducted a thorough review of Stamford Health’s nursing practice.
“A designation of this kind comes only after a rigorous assessment of patient outcomes, quality, safety, patient experience, employee engagement, and intraprofessional collaboration,” said Ellen Komar, Senior Vice President, Patient Care Services & Chief Nursing Officer at Stamford Health. “After an extraordinarily tough year, this achievement is a remarkable tribute to our nursing team’s dedication, resilience and spirit. On behalf of them all, we are so proud.”
A Magnet designated organization supports collaboration and an environment where nurses can grow professionally which has multiple benefits for Stamford Health, its patients and the communities it serves. In addition to the redesignation, attending Magnet appraisers noted five “exemplars” for superior performance. They included transformational leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic; and outperformance in the following quality and patient-experience indicators - reduction of falls with injury, reduction of catheter-associated urinary tract infection, and courtesy and respect.
“I am tremendously proud of everyone who contributed to this remarkable achievement,” said Kathleen Silard, President & CEO of Stamford Health. “I understand how meaningful this recognition is, not only to our nursing staff, but to all of Stamford Health. Magnet recognizes our collective commitment to consistently deliver greater quality, higher safety, and better outcomes for patients. Most of all, Magnet is a result of the commitment to excellent patient care, interdisciplinary teamwork, and successful collaboration and relationships with physicians,” added Silard.
“The nurses in Stamford's community have been one of the many heroes throughout this pandemic," said David R. Martin, Mayor of Stamford. "Every nurse has had to directly face the challenges of this past year and I am especially grateful for the nurses at Stamford Health. Magnet status is hard to achieve and we are fortunate to have healthcare worthy of such a distinction at Stamford Health. After such a challenging year, I want to commend all the nurses who have cared for our neighbors and loved ones. They've shown immense dedication not only for their patients — but to the community at large throughout the COVID-19 pandemic."
At Stamford Health, nurses are dedicated to improving culture, delivering exceptional care, and celebrating progress in patient experience. Learn more about the nursing team and their professional practice model.
