Obstetrics & Gynecology FAQs

  • What is an OB-GYN? What’s the difference between an obstetrician and a gynecologist?

An OB-GYN, or obstetrician-gynecologist, specializes in the care of women’s reproductive health. From routine care to more complex needs, they are trained to diagnose, treat, and care for a wide range of conditions women may experience in every age and stage of life.

Obstetrics (OB) and gynecology (GYN) are both medical specialties in women’s health. While many Stamford Health physicians specialize in both, the main difference between the two fields is the area of focus and expertise. An OB, or obstetrician, is a doctor who specializes in the care of women during all aspects of pregnancy, from family planning, genetic counseling and your first prenatal visit, to labor and delivery, and post-delivery care and plans.

A gynecologist, on the other hand, is a doctor who focuses on all other aspects of a woman’s reproductive health from the onset of puberty through menopause and beyond. They perform routine checkups and provide care for issues related to sexual health and menstruation, and can also offer expert specialized care that addresses infertility, pelvic pain, fibroids, incontinence, or even cancer.

Regardless of what kind of care you need, Stamford Health has an expert team of compassionate physicians ready to provide you with world-class personalized care. If you are looking to book an appointment, search our team of physicians or find a location today.

  • How often should you visit a gynecologist?

The frequency of OB-GYN checkups depends on several factors, including a woman’s age, health history, and current health status. Generally, the following are recommended guidelines:

    • Adolescence: A first visit to an OB-GYN is recommended between the ages of 13-15 or when a girl starts her period. After that, annual checkups are recommended.
    • Women in their 20s and 30s: Annual checkups are recommended, including pap smears every three years.
    • Women in their 40s and 50s: Annual checkups and pap smears are still recommended. Women in this age group may also start menopause and may need additional care and support.
    • Women over 60: Women who have gone through menopause may only need to visit a gynecologist every two or three years, unless they have other health concerns.

It’s important to note that these are general guidelines and every woman’s needs are different. Women who have a family history of gynecological cancer or other health conditions may choose to visit an OB-GYN more frequently. Women who are sexually active or who have been sexually active in the past may also need more frequent checkups.

It’s best to discuss the frequency of OB-GYN checkups with your health care provider, who can make recommendations based on individual needs and circumstances.

  • Do you need an OB-GYN for pregnancy?

It is recommended that you see an OB-GYN during pregnancy. An OB-GYN will provide prenatal care, which includes regular checkups, monitoring the baby’s growth and development, and managing any potential complications. They will also be responsible for managing labor and delivery, and providing postpartum care for both the mother and the baby. At Stamford Health, your OB-GYN will work with a team of health care providers, such as nurses and midwives, to address your concerns and provide comprehensive care for you and your baby throughout your pregnancy.

  • Can you keep a gynecology appointment when you have your period?

Yes, it is generally safe to keep your OB-GYN appointment even if you have your period. Your OB-GYN will be able to examine you and perform necessary tests or procedures during your appointment. Some women may prefer to schedule their appointments for a time when they are not menstruating, but this is not required.

It is important to note that during your period, your OB-GYN may not be able to perform a pap smear, as menstrual blood can affect the results. If you need a pap smear, it is best to schedule your appointment for a different time. At Stamford Health, your OB-GYN will be able to advise you on whether it's better to have your appointment during or after your period depending on what tests or procedures are needed. They will also provide you with proper care and comfort during the exam, and make sure that you feel safe and comfortable throughout the visit.

  • How often do you need a pap smears and exam?

Pap smears are an important part of women’s health care and should be done regularly. A pap test looks for abnormal cervical cells that could lead to cancer. The test is done by taking cells from the cervix with a brush. The frequency of pap smears depends on a woman’s age, medical history, and other factors. Most women ages 21 to 29 should get a pap smear every three years. Women ages 30 to 65 may be able to extend the interval to five years. Women with certain risk factors may need more frequent testing or additional tests. It is important for women to discuss their individual needs with their health care provider in order to determine how often they should get a pap smear. Contact Stamford Health for more information on services and appointments.

  • What are the diagnostic exams and screenings for gynecological cancer?

Stamford Health provides a range of diagnostic exams and screenings to detect several types of gynecological cancers. Some of the diagnostic exams and screenings available include pelvic exams, pap smears, colposcopy exams, biopsies, ultrasound, CT Scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET) scans, and more.

Early detection is crucial for effective treatment and recovery from gynecological cancers. For early detection, it is important for women to have regular pap tests, learn about warning signs of gynecological cancers, and talk with your primary care physician to learn what you can do to reduce your risk. Talk with your doctor, or book an appointment if you have questions or concerns about your health.
