Podiatric Surgery for Foot & Ankle Conditions

Providing expert, compassionate foot and ankle care throughout Fairfield County.

Our Approach

When it comes to feet and ankles, Stamford Health’s experienced podiatric surgeons are dedicated to creating an individualized treatment plan to address pain and discomfort.

  • Podiatry is the medical specialty focused on the care of the foot and ankle, including not only the muscles, tendons, and bones, but also the skin and nails. These are complicated body parts: Each foot has 26 bones (that’s 25% of the bones in your body), 33 joints, and more than 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
  • Foot and ankle pain can have many causes including birth defects, illness (such as diabetes), and injury (from trauma, stress, or overuse). Podiatrists work to alleviate foot and ankle ailments and to educate patients on caring for their feet to prevent injury and pain.

Podiatry FAQs

  • How do you know if you need podiatric surgery, or are there non-surgical alternatives for a foot or ankle issue?
Determining the need for podiatric surgery involves a thorough evaluation by our expert team. We explore conservative, non-surgical options whenever possible, such as physical therapy, orthotics, or medication. Our podiatrists will guide you through the decision-making process, ensuring the most effective and personalized treatment plan for your foot or ankle condition.
  • How long is the recovery period for common podiatric surgeries, and what can you do to ensure a smooth recovery?
Recovery periods vary based on the specific surgery, but our team will provide you with clear postoperative care instructions. Emphasizing rest, elevation, and following prescribed exercises will contribute to a smoother recovery. Our goal is to help you resume your normal activities with minimal downtime, and our podiatrists are here to support you at every step.
  • Are podiatric surgeries performed on an outpatient basis, or do you need to stay in the hospital overnight?
The majority of podiatric surgeries at Stamford Health are outpatient procedures, allowing you to return home the same day. However, individual cases may vary, and our team will discuss whether an overnight stay is necessary based on the complexity of the surgery and your overall health.
  • Are there specific signs of complications or distress to be aware of in a loved one recovering from podiatric surgery?
Family members should be vigilant for signs such as excessive swelling, increased pain, or unusual redness. If there are concerns about fever or difficulty in mobility, immediate medical attention is advised. Our team is available to address any postoperative questions or concerns promptly.
  • Are there resources or educational materials for family members to better understand the specific podiatric surgery and recovery expectations?
Absolutely. We provide comprehensive educational materials for family members to gain insights into the specific podiatric surgery, expected outcomes, and the recovery process. For additional support, explore our pain management resources and learn about our rehabilitation services. Your loved one’s recovery is our priority, and we are here to assist every step of the way.
