Community-Focused Help for All

Stamford Health is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Here at Stamford Health, we earn the trust of all by celebrating and understanding diversity, being inclusive, and respectful of others, and ensuring equitable treatment for all.

One way Stamford Health demonstrates its commitment to DEI is the work it does in, and with, the community to benefit the health and well-being of residents in lower Fairfield County and in Stamford. Many of our programs and services focus on health equity by increasing access to care for socially vulnerable populations and listening to what our community indicates it needs.

For example, we provide significant funding to Optimus, a federally qualified health center (FQHC) in Stamford, to ensure that lower-income residents can obtain high-quality primary and specialty care. Optimus is walkable for many economically distressed neighborhoods and is on public bus lines. Stamford Health’s medical residents work under Stamford Health physicians at Optimus to further assist the FQHC and educate future physicians about the needs of socially vulnerable residents.

To understand the most pressing health and social needs in its primary service area, Stamford Health conducts a triennial Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) which collects data through quantitative and qualitative research. We create a core working group comprised of Stamford Health executives, physicians, and other leaders and local nonprofits serving socially vulnerable populations, to assess the data and determine the top unmet health and social needs of our primary service area. Finally, we socialize the data about the community to the community through two public events open to the public.

The CHNA informs a three-year action plan, the Community Health Strategic Plan (CHIP), to address the identified top unmet needs reflected in the CHNA. View our latest CHNA and CHIP.

Our Leadership

Kathleen Silard, MS, BSN, RN, FACHE

President & Chief Executive Officer
Stamford Health System

Kathleen Silard likes to say that Stamford Health "offers world-class care, provided by kind and caring people, in a state-of-the-art setting." And she would know. After serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for 15 years starting in 2003, she was promoted to President and CEO of Stamford Health in 2018.

Stamford Health is an independent, non-profit health system comprised of a 305-bed acute care hospital, a growing ambulatory network including four multispecialty centers and a medical group with more than 200 physicians and advanced practice providers in 40 offices throughout Fairfield County, Connecticut. With more than 3,800 employees, Stamford Health is the largest employer in the City of Stamford, has an operating budget of close to $1 billion, and contributes more than $1 billion a year to the local economy.

In her roles as Executive Vice President and then President & CEO, Kathleen provided the vision and leadership which resulted in Stamford Health, accomplishing many milestones. Kathleen's expertise and foresight led to tile on-time and under-budget development of the new Stamford Hospital on the Bennett Medical Center campus in 2016, a $450 million facility that was the first LEED-Certified hospital in Connecticut.

Under Silard’s leadership, Stamford Health has experienced meaningful growth and advanced both quality and clinical programs, achieving recognition from major organizations such as U.S. News & World Report, Magnet, the American Heart Association, Great Place to Work™, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Group, Planetree International, and the American Heart Association. Stamford Health has also established collaborative relationships with the Hospital for Special Surgery and the Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center, and an expanded relationship with the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, bringing the country’s best clinical care right here to Fairfield County. In recent years, Kathleen shepherded Stamford Health through the COVID-19 pandemic, collaborating with community partners to serve at-risk groups, and even forging a unique partnership with the military to set up an alternative care site that was a regional resource during the 2020 spring surge.

Kathleen began her career as a nurse in the pediatrics and the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Albert Einstein Hospital in New York before entering the field of healthcare administration. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for various healthcare organizations including AdvanceCT, Connecticut Governor’s Workforce Council, and Greater New York Hospital Association. She is also on the Executive Committee of the Connecticut Hospital Association and is the recipient of several awards recognizing her dedication to local service in the community.

She is passionate about making a difference in the communities served by Stamford Health and committed to leading a team who provides expert, compassionate care that values and respects patients’ needs and preferences.
