Anesthesiology

You or your child may be having surgery, or facing a pain management issue. No matter your situation, Stamford Health has a dedicated group of anesthesiologists to help make the experience as pain-free as possible. You can take comfort in knowing our team:

  • Is skilled in regional anesthesia and intravenous sedation in the operating room, labor and delivery, the emergency room, and radiology.
  • Cover multiple locations—which means more flexibility for you.
  • Has a fellowship-trained pediatric anesthesiologist skilled in regional pain management and 3 fellowship-trained cardiac anesthesiologists.

Our Dedication to Pain Management

Our team has made a number of important advances and developments when it comes to your pain management:

  • We’ve recently offered a revolutionary option, thoracic paravertebral blocks, for those undergoing mastectomy or complex breast surgery. That means earlier discharge if you’d prefer to recover at home.
  • If you’re having major abdominal surgery, it can now be nearly painless thanks to the option of a sophisticated nerve block placed in the abdomen. This reduces the need for narcotics after your operation.
  • Our pain management service is recognized as a “center of excellence” and doctors from other hospitals come to TSH to be trained by our highly trained regional anesthesia experts.

Our Dedication to Cardiac Anesthesiology

The Division of Cardiac Anesthesiology plays a major role in heart surgery at Stamford Hospital. Our board-certified anesthesiologists are specially trained in cardiac anesthesiology and certified by the American Board of Echocardiography. We offer perioperative consultations to all patients scheduled for cardiac surgical procedures, including:

  • Coronary artery bypass
  • Graft and valve replacement surgery
  • Repair of the aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection
  • Electrophysiologic ablation to treat arrhythmia or irregular heart rhythm
  • Elective or emergency cardioversion
  • Implantable defibrillator device insertion
  • TEE for cardiac surgery and critical care

Our Approach to Pediatric Anesthesiology

When it comes to surgery and your child, we understand the importance of extra care. The anesthesiology team here at Stamford Health is also skilled in meeting the sensitive needs of children. Every year, over 1,000 children of all ages receive anesthesia at our hospital. Our pediatric surgical specialists are experienced in:

  • General surgery
  • Urologic surgery
  • Pulmonology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Cardiology
  • Orthopedics
  • Ear, nose, and throat surgery
  • Diagnostic testing like MRIs and CT scans

Before Your Child’s Surgery

We promise to make your child feel as comfortable and safe as possible. To help achieve this, we offer:

  • Tours of the operating room for the whole family—get to know the environment, as well as our anesthesiologists and nurses.
  • Tours of the pediatric floor and meet-and-greets with pediatric nurses if your child will be staying overnight.

The Day of Your Child’s Surgery

Here’s what you can expect:

  • You’ll accompany your child to a room where a nurse will greet you and take any additional medical information, including weight.
  • You’ll be invited into the operating room if you wish to be there for the induction of anesthesia.
  • If your child is very young, he or she will most likely receive anesthesia by inhaling a sweet-scented gas through a mask.

After surgery, our goal is to keep your child as comfortable and pain-free as possible. We do this by giving them the appropriate intravenous or oral medications. If needed, we can also use regional anesthetic.

Our Approach to Labor and Delivery

Since we at Stamford Health have anesthesiologists available at all times, we’re prepared to help bring your baby into the world comfortably. Here are the options we provide to you:

  • You can choose to have your baby naturally—without the help of medications.
  • Many women have an epidural placed to help manage labor pains. It’s the most common form of pain management for childbirth.
  • Should you plan or unexpectedly need a cesarean birth, a Stamford Health anesthesiologist will be there throughout your experience.
