Our dedicated team of experts is committed to providing high-quality care, early detection, diagnosis, and personalized treatment plans for all breast health concerns.

  • At what age should I start getting regular mammograms and breast screenings?

The recommended age for average risk women to begin mammograms is 40 years old. It is important to have a mammogram annually.

For patients with elevated risk, breast screenings may begin sooner. If you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors, it is essential to discuss your screening schedule with your health care provider. They can help determine if and when to start screening earlier, and whether MRI should be added as well.

  • What are the different types of breast imaging and their purposes?

There are several types of breast imaging, each serving specific purposes:

    • 3D Mammography: used for breast cancer screening and diagnosis. 3D images enhance the detection of abnormalities.
    • Breast ultrasound:
      • Supplements mammography for screening in women with dense breast tissue.
      • Useful for further evaluating breast lumps or abnormalities found during mammography.
    • Breast MRI: used to complement mammography. Offers highly sensitive images and is often used in high-risk cases or to assess specific breast concerns.
    • Biopsies and minimally invasive procedures: Procedures to sample breast imaging abnormalities for diagnostic purposes.

Your health care provider will recommend the appropriate imaging based on your specific needs and medical history.

  • Can men also receive breast care and screenings at the Stamford Health Breast Center?
Absolutely. While breast cancer is less common in men, it can still occur. The Breast Center welcomes men for breast care and screenings.
