Eva's Story

The Bennett Cancer Center helped me beat my cancer and it’s why I’m here today.

In the summer of 2005, Eva D. was on her way to the beach when she noticed that her seatbelt was irritating a lump. It felt odd, so she scheduled an appointment with her doctor to have it checked out. She never thought it would end up being cancer. Getting that news was hard, but telling her children was even more difficult – especially since they were still in high school. Her first thoughts were of them and if she would be around to see them graduate.

Right from the start though, Eva’s experience at the Bennett Cancer Center at Stamford Hospital was a journey she would never forget. After meeting her oncologist, Dr. Weinstein, for the first time – she simply stated, “he’s the one!” She was very appreciative of his factual and positive attitude. It made a huge difference in helping her maintain her own positive attitude and gave her the courage to fight through every up and down.

After six rounds of chemo and radiation, the tumor that was in her lung seemed to be gone and her lymph nodes, including the suspicious lump in her neck, were much improved. She returned to work hopeful, but had a seizure a short time later. Her doctors discovered that her lung cancer had grown again and traveled to her brain. Eva had been so confident in her team and treatment plan at Stamford Hospital that she elected to move forward with brain surgery and full brain radiation. But it didn’t end there. After surgery, a genetic mutation was revealed. Fortunately, the team at Stamford was able to recommend a new cancer drug, which has kept Eva cancer free for nearly eight years since the surgery.

Today, Eva’s future looks to be even brighter due to her experience at the Bennett Cancer Center. To this day, Dr. Weinstein keeps Eva updated on her progress and also keeps her up to date with the latest medication and treatment options. Eva says that she is very fortunate to have a hospital as caring as Stamford. The level of care and personal attention she received at the Bennett Cancer Center were wonderful. In her words “I love Stamford Hospital” says it all.
