Our Compassionate, Comprehensive Approach

Our expert radiation therapy team at Stamford Health offers the latest technology to create a personalized care plan to deliver radiation to the tumor area and destroy or damage cancer cells. Our dedicated team, including your nurse navigator, at Stamford Health is committed to each person that we treat, providing emotional support at every stage of the journey.

Our expert radiation therapy team is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and offers the latest technology to create a personalized care plan to deliver radiation to the tumor area and destroy or damage cancer cells. Our dedicated team, including your nurse navigator, at Stamford Health is committed to each person that we treat, providing emotional support at every stage of the journey.

Your radiation oncologist will develop a personalized care plan based on your individual case to deliver radiation to the tumor area. We aim to shield as much surrounding normal tissue as possible and utilize the latest technology, including computed tomography (CT) scans and linear accelerator machines.

Stamford Health’s nurse navigators ensure that no patient is ever left feeling alone. Our navigators work as part of a multidisciplinary oncology team to provide support to patients through their cancer treatment and into survivorship. They answer questions, coordinate appointments and services, and offer referrals to additional resources, if needed.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY SUPPORT TEAM

Our radiation oncologists work closely with pathologists, surgeons, geneticists, and more to determine the best course of treatment for you. We also hold regular tumor meetings to review and assess cases for the best possible care.

How Does Radiation Therapy Work?

Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams to destroy or damage cancer cells. Once the genetic material within the cancer cells have been destroyed, the cancer cells are not able to grow and spread. When they die, the body naturally removes them. Normal cells also are affected by radiation, but they are able to repair themselves in a way that cancer cells cannot.

Goals Of Radiation Therapy

Your radiation oncologist will develop a highly personalized care plan to meet one or more of the following goals:

  • Cure or shrink early-stage cancer.
  • Stop cancer from coming back (recurring) or moving somewhere else (metastasizing).
  • Treat and help minimize symptoms caused by advanced cancer.
  • Treat cancer that has returned (recurred).

Advanced Technology For Precise Treatment

TrueBeam Linear Accelerator

With our TrueBeam Linear Accelerator, you can receive precise radiation treatments in less time for more comfortable treatments with less damage to surrounding tissue. The accelerator is effective in delivering external beam radiation therapy in a sensitive area like the abdomen, breast, liver, lung, neck, or prostate.

INTERNAL BEAM RADIATION

Also called brachytherapy, internal beam radiation involves your doctor placing a small, powerful radioactive seed or pellet directly in or next to your tumor. This delivers a higher dose of radiation while still protecting as much healthy tissue as possible.

EXTERNAL BEAM RADIATION

External beam radiation therapy uses a machine to direct high-energy beams of radiation at precise points on your body. This therapy includes 3D conformal radiation therapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and stereotactic body radiation therapy.

Your Treatment Team

Your radiation therapy care team may include:

  • Radiation oncologist: Oversees your radiation therapy treatments.
  • Radiation therapist: Administers your daily radiation therapy treatment.
  • Radiation oncology nurse: Works alongside your radiation oncologist and radiation therapist to care for you and your family during your treatments.
  • Medical physicists: Works directly with the radiation oncologist during treatment planning and delivery.
  • Dosimetrists: Uses treatment planning computers to generate the radiation plan prescribed by your radiation oncologist.
  • Support care team: During your treatments, you will work with social workers, nutritionists, and nurse navigators.
