Personalized, Compassionate Therapeutic Care During Your Stay
Stamford Health is proud to offer a variety of inpatient therapy services to patients during their hospital stay. Each of our providers takes a multidisciplinary approach to services and always collaborates with the patient’s medical team.
- If your physician orders a consult, a physical therapist, occupational therapist, or speech pathologist will conduct an evaluation of your current level of mobility, self-care, cognition, and swallowing abilities.
- If a program is needed, your therapist will design a custom plan based on your abilities and to allow for a safe discharge, including the need for equipment such as a cane or walker.
- Therapists may refer you to go home with home care services, outpatient therapy, or further rehabilitation at an acute rehabilitation facility such as our inpatient Van Munching Rehabilitation Unit.

Physical Therapy During Your Stay
Our team of physical therapists focus on identifying and managing pain or limitations related to your illness or surgery. Once your program is set, your therapist will help you regain the mobility to perform basic skills such as moving in bed, standing, walking, or going up stairs.
Once you’re ready for discharge, your therapist will recommend any necessary medical equipment, participate in family or care partner training, and suggest additional physical therapy services following your stay, if necessary.
Occupational Therapy During Your Stay
Your acute care occupational therapist collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to make recommendations and an appropriate plan of care. Your sessions include activities and exercises that will improve your mobility, self-care, and cognitive abilities to allow for the safest discharge.
For discharge, they may refer home care services, outpatient therapy, or further rehabilitation. You will also be evaluated for your need of any equipment such as a cane, walker, or commode.
Speech Therapy During Your Stay
Speech-language pathologists (SLP) provide evaluation and treatment services to adults and infants in the NICU. Consults are given if a patient has difficulty with speech, language, cognition, swallowing, and voice. Or doctors will request an assessment for patients who have had a stroke, brain injury, respiratory failure, aspiration pneumonia, Covid-19, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and more.
Most commonly, SLPs assess whether a patient has dysphagia, or difficulty or discomfort during swallowing. They may perform a fiberoptic evaluation of swallowing (FEES), where a scope with a camera is inserted through the nose to assess the anatomy and physiology of the throat, airway, and vocal cords during swallowing. Or they may conduct a modified barium swallow study (MBS), a radiology test using video X-ray to assess the integrity of the swallow in real-time.
