What’s a Physical Therapist?

Prevent injuries, rebuild strength, and reduce pain with the help of the expert physical therapists at Stamford Health and HSS Rehabilitation.

Physical therapists (PTs) study movement and can provide care throughout all stages of life. PTs use education, exercise, and hands-on care to help you move more comfortably, prevent problems, and live well.

During Your Hospital Stay

When admitted to the hospital with an acute illness or after surgery, your physicians may recommend a physical therapy consultation.  In a hospital setting, physical therapists focus on identifying and managing any deficits secondary to your illness or surgery, promoting early out of bed mobility, and maximizing function.  In more serious cases, your therapist may be involved in helping you regain the ability to perform basic mobility functions such as moving in bed, standing, walking, and going upstairs.  Your physical therapist will also play a vital role in the discharge process, recommending any necessary medical equipment, participating in family or caregiver training, and recommending additional physical therapy services following your stay at Stamford Hospital, if necessary.

Physical Therapy at Van Munching Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility

The role of physical therapy in acute inpatient rehabilitation is to maximize functional mobility and independence while promoting safety. On the Van Munching Rehabilitation Unit, Physical Therapy will be part of the 3 hours of required therapy. Physical Therapists will assist you with functional mobility tasks, including:

  • Getting in and out of bed
  • Standing up from a chair
  • Walking and stair training
  • Exercises and activities to improve strength, balance, coordination, and endurance

The Physical Therapists work with the interdisciplinary team for discharge planning to make recommendations for assistive devices, appropriate next level of care, need for assistance post-discharge.
