Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program

Clinical experience. High standards. Personalized training.

We're proud to offer various learning opportunities within all subspecialties of OB/GYN. Our community-oriented environment is dedicated to complete hands-on education for you, our resident. We’re here to help develop your knowledge of evidence-based medicine, and surgical skills in both the operating room and stimulation lab.

As an OB/GYN resident, we’ll work with you to accomplish the following:

  • Treat a diverse patient population with a full range of medical and surgical issues
  • Learn the importance of teamwork and responsibility under supportive leadership
  • Master basic skills in the OB/GYN field with exposure to all subspecialties
  • Be on your way to a fellowship, if you wish

The Obstetrics and Gynecology program at Stamford Hospital accepts four residents per year, and has a strong faculty, representing generalists and all subspecialties. All applications are processed through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS®).

  • Highlights of our program

  • Subspecialties
  • In addition to obstetrics and gynecology rotations, first-year residents get early exposure to the specialties including: Maternal Fetal Medicine, Oncology, and Urogynecology. They have rotations in hands on ultrasound, anesthesia and breast services.
  • Second-year residents get more in-depth experience in each of the subspecialties: REI, Urogynecology, Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine and genetics. This experience enables residents to consider if they wish to apply for a fellowship and offers them a chance to form relationships with faculty mentors who can guide their research and career choices.
  • Third-year residents spend a month at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City where they learn to diagnose, treat and follow the most complex gynecologic cancer referral cases.
  • The third-year residents also are given an elective month to explore clinical or research experiences in other institutions in the U.S. and abroad.
  • In the fourth year, residents function as the chief of service, where they direct the team and coordinate patient care. They hone their surgical skills and operative delivery skills while preparing for graduation and their future career.
  • Residents benefit from the Family Planning Division and have the added resource of our Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Fellowship.
  • The OB/GYN program offers simulation sessions for attending physicians, residents and nurses. Examples of topics include shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, operative delivery and robotics.
  • Residents have ample research opportunities and actively participate in quality improvement projects.
  • Residents interact directly with the faculty and scrub on the most complex cases, including all cancer and pelvic reconstruction procedures. A strong mentoring relationship between residents and faculty is an important part of our program.

  • Two full-time urogynecologists perform a full range of medical and surgical procedures. The office is conveniently located and residents participate in the office practice and scrub on all cases in the main OR and in the ambulatory surgery center.
  • A full-time reproductive endocrinologist conducts basic science and clinical teaching sessions. Additionally, the residents spend time in the local office of an affiliated REI group who share their knowledge and patient experience with the residents.
  • Our four gynecologic oncologists teach surgical skills, robotic skills and management principles for patients with a gynecologic malignancies.. A monthly multidisciplinary tumor board examines the pathology and determines a treatment plan for each patient.
  • High-risk obstetric care is supervised by two full-time perinatologists, a pediatric cardiologist and a genetic counselor. In the antepartum testing unit, residents perform detailed ultrasound examinations under direct supervision. Referrals for genetics counseling, amniocentesis and CVS expose the resident to additional learning opportunities.

The labor and delivery unit oversees 2,500 deliveries annually. The Whittingham Specialty Care Pavilion includes 14 labor and delivery rooms, two operating rooms, spacious and private postpartum rooms, a new nursery and a state-of-the-art 14-bed Neonatal ICU.

The operating rooms at Stamford Hospital and in the Tully Ambulatory Surgery Pavillion use state of the art equipment, including the daVinci® robot. Our residents have exposure to the robot early in training and have graduated responsibility until they can sit at the console under direct supervision of qualified attendings.

The physicians from all departments at Stamford Hospital enthusiastically embrace the opportunity to teach. The Departments of Medicine, Surgery, and Family Practice provide both formal teaching and consultative services. Neonatal resuscitation is taught by attending neonatologists. A special relationship with the Department of Urology has enabled residents to assist on their urogynecology cases. Many attendings hold their academic appointments at Columbia University.

Graduating residents interested in fellowship programs have been successful in obtaining these positions. Others practice as generalists in Stamford as well as in other communities throughout the country.

As the face of healthcare changes, we expect to meet the challenge of providing an excellent fundamental education, which will prepare residents well for the future.
Stamford Health's Department of Research and Discovery is an experienced, multi-faceted team that provides key assistance for many pharmaceutical and federally funded research trials.
