Our Approach

The Concussion Center, located in the clinical space at Chelsea Piers Connecticut, provides comprehensive services for adults and children who may have experienced a concussion, or an injury to the brain that causes a temporary loss of brain function. Our multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to evaluate symptoms, conduct testing, and develop a treatment plan best suited to each individual case.

Our specialized team is composed of experts in adult and pediatric neurology, integrative medicine, neuropsychology, and vestibular and cognitive speech rehabilitation.

Since concussions affect everyone differently, we develop customized treatment plans to best meet our patient’s specific needs and accelerate the recovery process. We understand that consistency is key, so our providers follow patients throughout their recovery process.

In addition to providing care after an injury, the center also offers comprehensive baseline evaluations for those without concussion.

Symptoms Of A Concussion

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) that occurs when the brain is subjected to significant force. Loss of consciousness is not a required indicator of concussion; in fact, most concussions occur without loss of consciousness.

Sometimes symptoms don’t show up until days after the original trauma. If, after a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body, any of the below signs are observed, call 911 or go to the Emergency Department for evaluation right away.

  • Loss of consciousness.
  • Drowsiness or inability to be awakened.
  • Weakness, numbness, or decreased coordination.
  • Repeated vomiting.
  • Unusual behavior.
  • Disorientation.
  • One pupil is larger than the other.
  • Worsening headache.
  • Convulsions or seizures.
  • Slurred speech.
  • Inability to recognize people or places.
  • Increased restlessness or agitation.

Concussion Care At Stamford Health

Our team works together to address problems with dizziness, balance, attention, and memory, as well as migraine, neck pain, visual difficulties, and emotional concerns.

  • BASELINE EVALUATION
  • POST-INJURY EVALUATION

Comprehensive Baseline Evaluation

A baseline assessment provides an accurate picture of an individual’s healthy brain functioning in the areas most typically impacted by concussion, such as memory, speed, vision, and balance. In the event a head injury occurs, a baseline evaluation is a useful tool in helping to develop a treatment plan and also in determining when an individual is fully recovered.

The Concussion Center’s comprehensive baseline assessment includes:

  • Neurocognitive testing.
  • Vestibular ocular screening.
  • Balance testing.
  • Thorough medical history.
  • Review of results and concussion education.

Experts recommend yearly baseline assessments up to age 14, and then every two years. In the event of an injury, a post-injury test is administered and compared to the baseline.

Post-Injury Evaluation

At the Concussion Center, we pride ourselves on delivering person-centered, evidence-based care. We will conduct comprehensive testing at your initial appointment to understand your injury and your individual circumstances.

At each visit, you will be expected to complete neurocognitive testing to assess aspects of cognition that are most typically impacted by concussion. We will also assess the functioning of your vestibular and ocular systems as this can inform the need for further treatment. We aim to educate you about this injury so that you leave knowing more about concussion and the steps that have been shown to promote recovery.
