Our Approach

Having trouble getting a good night’s rest? An estimated 50-70 million Americans are affected by sleep disorders with as many as 95% who remain undiagnosed. Since sleep disorders may significantly impact job performance, relationships, mood, sex drive, and health, it’s important to find effective treatment.

Stamford Health’s Sleep Center, accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), offers a comprehensive approach to the diagnosis and treatment of most sleep disorders in children (age 1+) and adults.

We offer consultations and evaluations by board-certified pulmonologists and sleep specialists as well as collaborative therapy with dentists and ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgeons when necessary.

We can fit sleep apnea patients with their medical device (such as a CPAP) at Stamford Hospital.

We are generally able to schedule sleep studies within two weeks. Most insurance companies and managed care plans cover the cost of evaluating, testing, and treating sleep disorders in both adults and children.

We collaborate with ENT surgeons to help evaluate whether you may be a good candidate for implantable devices such as Inspire.

Types Of Sleep Disorders We Treat

INSOMNIA

Up to 30% of people have some degree of insomnia, or difficulty either falling or staying asleep. This can cause daytime fatigue and irritability.

NARCOLEPSY

Most commonly, people have excessive daytime sleepiness, but it is also characterized by sudden weakness in the body, hallucination, and/or having a sensation of being unable to move while half asleep.

OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA

Repetitive, partial blockage of the back of your throat leading to sounds such as choking, gasping for air, or loud snoring. Untreated sleep apnea doubles your risk for a heart attack and significantly increases your risk for stroke.

RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME

Restless leg syndrome is a condition that causes a very strong urge to move the legs. The urge to move usually is caused by an uncomfortable feeling in the legs. It typically happens in the evening or at night when sitting or lying down.

PEDIATRIC SLEEP DISORDERS

Our pediatric sleep specialists can treat conditions including pediatric sleep apnea, sleep onset association disorder, limit-setting sleep disorder, and phase delay.

REM BEHAVIOR DISORDER

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder is a sleep disorder in which you physically act out vivid, often unpleasant dreams with vocal sounds and sudden, often violent arm and leg movements during REM sleep.

What To Expect: Your Sleep Study

  • HOME SLEEP STUDY
  • ADULT OVERNIGHT SLEEP STUDY
  • PEDIATRIC OVERNIGHT SLEEP STUDY

Home Sleep Study

Home sleep studies can only be used to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Following insurance approval, you will be given an appointment to come to the Sleep Center to meet with a sleep technologist who will give you a device and show you how to use it. You use the home sleep test for one night only, and then you return it to the Sleep Center the next day. Test results will be available in approximately 7 - 10 days.

Adult Overnight Sleep Study

Overnight hospital sleep studies can be used to diagnose a wide variety of sleep disorders. You will arrive at Stamford Hospital for your sleep study between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. We will give you time to settle into your comfortable hotel-like room with a private bathroom and shower.

Our sleep technology specialist will prepare you for the sleep study, applying adhesive electrodes to connect you to our monitoring equipment. This process is not uncomfortable. You will be free to watch television or read until you are ready to go to sleep. The study will be conducted throughout the night while you sleep, and you can leave for your normal routine in the morning.

Pediatric Overnight Sleep Study

As with adult overnight sleep studies, pediatric patients will spend the night in our state-of-the-art Sleep Center. Our rooms, which are furnished to look like a hotel room with a queen-size bed, luxury reclining chair, cable television, and private bath with shower, are large enough to accommodate a care partner.

After arriving and settling in, our sleep technology specialist will prepare the patient and apply adhesive electrodes that connect to our monitoring equipment. This process is not uncomfortable. Then, the care partner can help the child settle in with their typical nighttime routine. The study will be conducted throughout the night, and the child and care partner can leave in the morning.
