A clinical trial is medical research that involves people. This research evaluates new ways to screen for, diagnose, treat and prevent diseases.
Why should you participate in a clinical trial?
When you voluntarily join a clinical trial, you can help make a valuable contribution toward the progress against a specific disease, and medicine and science generally. Participating in a clinical trial is also a way to play a more active role in your own healthcare. Your contribution can help future generations lead healthier, potentially disease-free lives. When you choose to participate in a clinical trial at Stamford Health, you become a partner in scientific discovery!
What happens when you are part of a clinical trial?
At Stamford Health, the first step is to get in touch with our Department of Research.
- Our experienced research team will explain the trial in detail and help answer any questions .
- Then, if you agree to participate and are deemed eligible, you sign an informed consent form.
- This entire experience can be electronic so you’re able to have these discussions from the convenience of your home and with your family present, if you prefer.
- Our clinical trials program is accessible and all-inclusive, and we welcome people of different backgrounds and languages.
Once you are enrolled in a clinical trial at Stamford Health, you will:
- Receive the therapy or a placebo, if the trial is randomized (like flipping a coin), and you usually will not know if you received the therapy or the placebo until the end of the trial.
- Have several appointments with the research team and the doctor who is overseeing the trial and your care.
- Be monitored throughout the trial and afterwards to ensure your safety and well-being, which are our top priority.
We have many clinical trials that allow virtual visits that utilize digital health technologies so that you can participate from the convenience of the home rather than traveling to Stamford Health.
How many clinical trials does Stamford Health conduct each year?
Each year, the Office of Research conducts between 80 and 90 clinical trials in several therapeutic areas such as: cardiology, electrophysiology, emergency medicine, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology, infectious disease, internal medicine, interventional cardiology, nephrology, oncology, pain management, and pulmonology.
