Stamford Health Volunteer Spotlight: Tanmay Mehta

Published: May 11, 2023

Stamford Health is thankful for the many volunteers that make a difference at the hospital every day. Our staff ensures that our volunteers are well-matched and well-recognized for their individual strengths and talents, with a fit for everyone — from teenagers to adults! Today, we're spotlighting Tanmay Mehta, who has been volunteering for several years. We hope his story may inspire you to volunteer; you can learn more about our volunteer opportunities here.

Thank you for all the work you do for Stamford Health! Tell us about your volunteer work.

I’ve been volunteering for Stamford Health since high school. I began volunteering as a junior, and took a break from volunteering while I attending Cornell University. Since graduating, I returned to Stamford Health – so I have been volunteering on and off for about six years.

Most recently, I’ve been volunteering at the emergency department. I love it!

What do you typically do on your shifts?

I have a full-time job, so I volunteer during my free time on the weekends. I volunteer for a full day on Saturday and a half-day on Sunday.

I get to interact with the patients – chatting with them as they wait, taking their vitals, and helping them with anything they may need during their visits. I am also on hand to support the clinical staff if they need supplies or anything else.

Why did you become a volunteer?

My sister was diagnosed with a genetic blood disorder at a young age. I donated bone marrow to support her – and through that experience I interacted with many doctors, nurses, and other clinical staff. It inspired me to work in health care – I am currently a scientific researcher. Through my volunteer work at Stamford Health, I love to see the impact science has on the actual patient.

I leave every shift feeling better – it is inspiring and I’m so grateful to be able to volunteer and work directly with Stamford Health patients.

Do you have any advice for others looking to get involved?

I would encourage anyone to volunteer at Stamford Health. It has been a wonderful experience for me.
