Whether you are playing tennis, are training for a marathon, biking, or playing outside with your children, don’t let the embarrassing problem of leaking urine prevent you from doing the things you love. This is a common problem, but there are solutions to keep you dry and happy.

You are not alone!

Many women suffer from a condition known as Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI), or unwanted leakage of urine with activity. It is so common that many women often accept this as a consequence of childbirth or simply “getting older,” but you should know that this condition IS treatable.

What is happening?

When extra pressure is placed on the muscles of your pelvic floor (think pregnancy, childbirth, chronic constipation, lifting, or strenuous exercises, to name a few), the muscles supporting the urethra become weak. As a consequence, the urethra is not properly supported and can function like a leaky faucet.

How do I treat this?

The goal of treatment is to support the urethra. Strengthening the pelvic muscles through Kegel exercises or directed pelvic floor physical therapy can improve leakage in some women. For many others, there is a minor surgical procedure that can typically resolve incontinence. The recovery is minimal, and most women resume regular activity in a short time.

Who do I see for this condition?

A board certified Urogynecologist can evaluate you properly and offer appropriate treatment options. A Urogynecologist is an OB/GYN who has had specific, additional training in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery.

Ladies, it’s time to get your life back and resume your active lifestyle. There is no need to wear additional protection anymore. Live the life you deserve!
