Breast Cancer FAQs

  • What signs or symptoms of breast cancer should you be aware of, and when should you seek immediate medical attention at Stamford Health?
Be vigilant for symptoms such as a lump, changes in breast size or shape, nipple discharge, or skin changes. If you notice any concerning changes, seek immediate medical attention at Stamford Health for a thorough evaluation.
  • At what age should you start regular mammogram screenings for breast cancer at Stamford Health, and how often should they be scheduled?
The recommended age for average risk women to begin mammograms is 40 years old. It is important to have a mammogram annually. For patients with elevated risk, breast screenings may begin sooner. If you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors, it is essential to discuss your screening schedule with your health care provider. They can help determine if and when to start screening earlier, and whether MRI should be added as well. Visit our mammography page for more details.
  • If you have a family history of breast cancer, how does that affect your screening recommendations at Stamford Health?
A family history may warrant earlier or more frequent screenings. The high-risk program at Stamford Health is a specialized program designed for individuals who are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer. High-risk individuals may have a family history of breast cancer, genetic mutations, or other risk factors. This program provides a personalized risk assessment, advanced screening options, and comprehensive care for those who may benefit from increased vigilance in breast cancer prevention and early detection.
  • How quickly can you expect to receive the results of my breast cancer screenings at Stamford Health, and what happens if an abnormality is detected?
At Stamford Health, we understand the importance of timely results. If you are getting a mammogram screening, results are provided typically within one business day via phone and the patient portal. A report will also be sent to your physician. To obtain copies of your scan, please complete the AUTHORIZATION OF RELEASE FORM. If an abnormality is found, our team will guide you through further diagnostic steps and discuss a personalized care plan. In the event of an abnormal finding, our dedicated team ensures swift communication to discuss the results with you.
  • If diagnosed with breast cancer at Stamford Health, what surgical options are available? How is the choice made between lumpectomy and mastectomy?

At Stamford Health, our experienced team discusses personalized treatment plans tailored to your unique situation. Surgical options for breast cancer may include lumpectomy (breast-conserving surgery) or mastectomy (complete removal). The decision is influenced by factors such as the stage of cancer, tumor size, and individual preferences. We collaborate closely with patients, ensuring they are well-informed and empowered to make choices aligned with their health goals.

Stamford Health offers a wide range of breast surgery options, including but not limited to:

    • Lumpectomy (breast-conserving surgery).
    • Mastectomy (partial or total).
    • Lymph node procedures.
    • Lymphedema surgery.
    • Breast reconstruction.
    • Nipple-sparing mastectomy.
    • Surgical biopsies.
    • Excision of benign breast tumors.
    • Reduction mammaplasty (BREAST REDUCTION).
    • Breast augmentation.

Our experienced breast surgeons will discuss your specific diagnosis and treatment plan to determine the most appropriate surgical approach for your needs.

  • Can Stamford Health provide breast reconstruction surgery after a mastectomy, and when is the best time to discuss this option with my health care team?

Yes, breast reconstruction is an option for many patients after breast surgery. The timing of breast reconstruction varies. Some patients choose immediate reconstruction, performed during the same surgery as the mastectomy. Others opt for delayed reconstruction, which can occur at a later date, often after other treatments like chemotherapy or radiation.

Our breast surgeons will discuss the best timing and breast reconstruction options for your unique circumstances, ensuring you have the opportunity to make an informed decision regarding your post-surgery choices.

  • Can Stamford Health provide guidance on fertility preservation options before starting breast cancer treatment, and when should this discussion take place?
Recognizing the significance of fertility preservation, Stamford Health encourages early discussions on this topic as part of the breast cancer treatment planning process. Our compassionate health care professionals are available to provide guidance and support, addressing your concerns and helping you make informed decisions about preserving fertility options.
  • Are clinical trials for breast cancer treatments available at Stamford Health, and how can I explore participation in these trials?

Stamford Health is at the forefront of advancing breast cancer research through our commitment to clinical trials. We offer opportunities for patients to explore cutting-edge treatments and contribute to medical advancements.
