Speech-Language Therapy

If your provider recommends therapy services, ask for a referral to Stamford Health.

Our Approach

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs), or speech therapists, have advanced training to diagnose and treat problems with communication, feeding, and swallowing. Patients most commonly have these issues due to an injury or health condition, disability, surgery, or developmental disorder.

At Stamford Health, our continued collaboration with Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) connects top-ranked clinicians with our patients in Connecticut.

We provide individualized treatment based on the patient’s abilities and goals.

Speech-Language Services At Stamford Health

COGNITIVE LINGUISTIC THERAPY

The outpatient speech team evaluates patients with difficulties such as word-finding and thought organization due to a traumatic brain injury, concussion, or memory loss. Sessions train patients to use an array of strategies to improve their immediate, short-term, and working memory skills.

SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPY FOR ADULTS

Major life events like traumatic brain injury, cancer, and stroke can alter the way adults produce and understand language — and the way language is processed in the brain. Our Tully Health Center’s speech team is trained in a variety of treatment approaches to address aphasia, apraxia, and dysarthria for improved communication and confidence.

SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPY FOR CHILDREN

Our pediatric SLP team at Tully Health Center rely on play-based activities to treat a wide range of communication, articulation, and language delays and disorders. We’re trained in PROMPT, a multi-sensory technique to help develop motor control, and Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) feed approach for picky eaters and problem eaters.

SPEECH THERAPY FOR HEAD & NECK CANCER

Working closely with patients from the Carl & Dorothy Bennett Cancer Center, our programs provide the resources and personalized care necessary to prevent or limit adverse effects of chemotherapy or radiation therapy on swallowing.

SWALLOWING THERAPY

Difficulty swallowing can have a significant impact on health, safety, and quality of life. SLPs clinically assess a patient’s swallow safety and function. Then they create a plan to educate and train patients to strengthen the muscles involved in swallowing so that eating becomes safe and enjoyable again.

VOICE THERAPY

Voices can change as a result of illness, disease, or even talking too much or too loudly. This can make communication difficult. Our SLPs at Tully Health Center work with patients to improve the quality, loudness, and pitch of their voices. Our SLPs are all certified LSVT LOUD clinicians, a specialized research-based treatment approach to improving loudness and speech clarity in patients with Parkinson’s Disease.

Personalized Speech & Swallowing Therapy

SLPs work with patients of all ages to create a treatment plan that meets their needs and preferences. Depending on the condition, symptoms, and goals, an SLP may recommend an assessment to learn more about your condition.
