A Message From the Chair of Medicine

Nicholas Fiebach MD

Dr. Nicholas Fiebach is the Chair of Medicine at Stamford Health and Professor Emeritus of Medicine at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons. He is a general internist who joined Stamford Health in July 2018 after spending 15 years on the faculty at Columbia, first as residency program director in Medicine and then as Vice-Chair for Graduate and Continuing Medical Education. Prior to that he was on the faculties of the medical schools at Yale and Johns Hopkins.

Stamford Hospital has a deep tradition of supporting medical education. The best clinical training must always be supported by the best clinical care, and Stamford Hospital exemplifies that. We were recognized this year as high-performing in 6 clinical areas by US News and World Report and are designated a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence and collaboration. Person-centered care here is sustained by a spacious state-of-the-art campus and the Planetree philosophy of personalized and humanized healthcare. Our attending physicians offer expertise across the breadth of internal medicine, providing tertiary care and subspecialty teaching. Invasive, catheter-based cardiac therapies, advanced endoscopic procedures, an acute stroke team, oncologists affiliated with the Dana Farber Cancer Center, a pulmonary/critical care team recognized for innovative approaches to intensive care and an evidence-based pain management program are just some of the services which make Stamford Hospital a regional referral center.

Stamford Hospital is a major educational affiliate of the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University and is also affiliated with the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University. Many of the physicians in the Department of Medicine have faculty appointments at Columbia and Quinnipiac, and medical students from those schools rotate on medical teaching services at Stamford for clinical clerkships, electives and subinternships. An academic learning environment is cultivated by the Department of Medicine, and supported by a high-tech Medical Library and a sophisticated Department of Research and Discovery. As a former residency program director, I am passionate about providing a rigorous but humanistic training experience for our residents.

We welcome a chance to share a look at our program with you.
