Columbia University Irving Medical Center Expands Partnership With Stamford Health

Stamford Health has recently expanded its successful partnership with Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) to include both neurosurgery and cardiac surgery.

Stamford Health has collaborated for over a decade with Columbia University as a teaching affiliate. This increased partnership further builds upon the high-quality cardiovascular and neurosciences services already in place at Stamford Health.

In 2021, Stamford Health, known for its award-winning cardiac care through the Heart & Vascular Institute, expanded its relationship with Columbia University to offer treatment and expertise from CUIMC’s nationally recognized heart surgeons. Today, five of Columbia University’s top surgeons see and operate on patients at Stamford Health. The surgeons perform both scheduled and emergency heart surgery.

The cardiac partnership unites the clinical expertise of Stamford Health’s very own, nationally recognized doctors Michael Coady, MD, MBA, MPH, and David Yuh, MD, with Michael Argenziano, MD, and four of his colleagues, Isaac George, MD, Yuji Kaku, MD, Koji Takeda, MD, as well as Columbia's Chief of Adult Cardiac Surgery Hiroo Takayama, MD, PhD. In 2023, Stamford Hospital was recognized as a High Performing Hospital in heart attack and heart failure by U.S. News & World Report.*

By expanding this relationship to include neurosurgery, Stamford Health aims to increase its neurosurgical capabilities and expand its clinical team to treat a wider range of cerebrovascular conditions and more complex stroke cases. Stamford Health recently welcomed CUIMC endovascular neurosurgeon, Max Shutran, MD, to its medical staff. To date, Dr. Shutran has begun to care for patients with vascular conditions in the brain and spine using both minimally invasive (endovascular) and open surgical techniques.

Stamford Health’s neurosciences team is co-led by Andrea Douglas, MD, FAANS, FACS, chief of neurosurgery and co-director of the HSS Spine Center with Stamford Health, Todd Miller, MD, director of neuro-interventional radiology, and Donald Price, MD, director of neurology, and consists of board-certified neurologists, neurosurgeons, pain management physicians, stroke experts, sleep specialists, concussion experts, headache and geriatric care specialists.

These clinicians employ the latest research, imaging technologies and a full range of minimally invasive treatment plans. In 2020, Stamford Health’s Stroke Center was recognized by the Joint Commission as being “Thrombectomy Capable." In 2023, the Stroke Center received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Award (Target: Stroke Honor Roll and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll). Stamford Health was also recognized by U.S. News & World Report in 2023 as a High Performing Hospital in stroke care.*
