Breast Surgery Options

BREAST CONSERVING PROCEDURES

During a lumpectomy or partial mastectomy surgery, only the cancer tissue and some healthy surrounding tissue is removed.

BREAST REMOVAL PROCEDURES

In addition to a total (or simple) mastectomy, which removes the entire breast, these procedures may include removal of the breast and lymph nodes, removal of the breast while saving the nipple and chest wall skin, or a prophylactic mastectomy.

LYMPH NODE PROCEDURES

These surgeries may remove select armpit lymph nodes or more armpit lymph nodes, depending on how much the cancer has spread.

LYMPHEDEMA SURGERY

Lymphedema, or the buildup of fluid in your body, is a common side effect of breast cancer surgery. There are many surgical treatment options to help address the condition and decrease your future risk.

BREAST RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY

After undergoing a mastectomy, breast reconstruction surgery is a procedure that many patients consider. Our team of breast surgeons will discuss and detail options.

SECOND OPINION PROGRAM

When you’re diagnosed with breast cancer at another institution, it may be helpful to consider a second opinion. Our team will work with you to provide the answers you need.
  • MORE ABOUT LYMPHEDEMA
Lymphedema is the buildup of fluid in your body’s tissues, which brings about swelling, water retention, pain, and dimpled skin. Lymphedema is often caused by general surgery, cancer-related surgery, and the removal of lymph nodes – which can all lead to damage to your lymphatic system. In fact, there’s a strong connection between breast cancer surgery and lymphedema as breast cancer can often spread to surrounding lymph nodes. If you’ve been told you have lymphedema, there are now surgical procedures to address it. This might include a lymphaticovenous bypass, to allow for better drainage of fluid throughout your body. In some cases, one of Stamford Health’s dedicated and specialty trained lymphedema surgeons may perform this treatment as part of your original cancer surgery to help reduce the risk of developing lymphedema.

These advanced techniques can provide patients with smaller incisions, less scarring, reduced pain, and a quicker recovery. Robotic-assisted surgery can enhance the precision and dexterity of the surgeon. Your surgeon will discuss whether these options are suitable for your specific case during the consultation.

    • Regular post-operative appointments to monitor your healing progress.
    • Guidance on wound care and pain management.
    • Assistance in managing any potential side effects or complications.

Our team is committed to providing ongoing care and support to ensure your optimal recovery and well-being.

  • What is the typical recovery time after a breast surgery procedure?
Recovery time can vary depending on the type of breast surgery performed and individual factors. In general, most patients can expect to return to their normal activities within a few weeks. However, strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for a longer period, typically around 4 to 6 weeks. Your surgeon will provide you with specific post-operative care instructions tailored to your surgery.
  • Can you choose breast reconstruction options after surgery?

Yes, breast reconstruction is an option for many patients after breast surgery. The timing of breast reconstruction varies. Some patients choose immediate reconstruction, performed during the same surgery as the mastectomy. Others opt for delayed reconstruction, which can occur at a later date, often after other treatments like chemotherapy or radiation.

Our breast surgeons will discuss the best timing and breast reconstruction options for your unique circumstances, ensuring you have the opportunity to make an informed decision regarding your post-surgery choices.
