The Heart Of Our Approach

Our heart surgeons deliver a collaborative person-centered approach to care. Our team has access to the most modern surgical techniques and has extensive training from some of the most prestigious academic programs in the country.

The cardiac surgery team has decades of heart surgery experience and expertise in all areas of adult cardiac surgery.

A personalized, patient-centered approach is what makes our practice and experience unique. From the very beginning, each patient will work closely with the patient navigator, a health care professional who will act as a patient’s personal advocate and can help navigate the treatment process from pre-op through recovery.

We have expanded our long-standing relationship with Columbia University to bring the expertise of select heart surgeons from Columbia University Irving Medical Center right to Stamford Health. The surgeons perform both scheduled and emergency heart surgery, making access more convenient for patients and their families.

Types Of Cardiac Surgery We Perform

The Stamford Health heart care team is made up of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and technicians who work collaboratively throughout the process.

AORTIC VALVE REPLACEMENT

When deciding on the replacement valve type, a surgeon will discuss the choices and advise the type of valve that will work best, considering factors such as the recipient’s age, size, and location of the natural valve, and condition of the heart.

CORONARY ARTERY BYPASS GRAFTING (CABG)

Also called heart bypass, CABG is a surgical treatment for treating a severe blockage in a coronary artery. The goal of this procedure is to reroute the blood supply around a blocked coronary artery.

MITRAL VALVE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT

The mitral valve is one of the heart’s four valves that helps blood flow through the heart and out to the body. Surgery is often needed to either repair or replace the mitral valve because it is either blocked or leaking.

COMBINED CABG-VALVE

In this complex procedure, surgeons perform aortic valve replacement and CABG procedure for a coronary blockage in the same operation.

AORTIC ANEURYSM AND DISSECTION

Surgery is performed to remove an aortic aneurysm and eliminate the future risk of tearing or aortic rupture. Various surgical strategies exist to deal with problems in each part of the aorta (root, arch, and ascending).

Heart Surgery FAQs

  • What pre-surgical preparations are required before undergoing cardiac surgery, and how can you ensure that you’re ready for the procedure?
Before cardiac surgery, thorough pre-surgical preparations are essential. A dedicated nurse navigator will guide you through specific requirements, which may include medical evaluations, tests, and lifestyle adjustments. Ensuring you follow these guidelines diligently will help optimize your readiness for the procedure and contribute to a successful outcome.
  • How long is the recovery process after cardiac surgery, and what can you expect during the postoperative period?
The recovery process after cardiac surgery varies for each individual. Postoperative care involves pain management, physical therapy, and a structured rehabilitation program. Factors such as the type of surgery, overall health, and adherence to postoperative guidelines influence recovery time. Your care team will provide detailed guidance on what to expect and how to navigate the postoperative period for a smoother recovery.
  • Are there age restrictions for cardiac surgery, and how does age impact the decision-making process for surgery?
There are typically no strict age restrictions for cardiac surgery. The decision to undergo surgery is based on a comprehensive evaluation that considers various factors, including age, overall health, and the specific cardiac condition. Age alone does not determine eligibility, and our care team assesses each case individually to make informed decisions.
  • Can you participate in clinical trials related to cardiac surgery, and how do you find information about available research opportunities?
Participation in cardiac surgery clinical trials may be an option for eligible individuals. Information about available research opportunities can be obtained through discussions with your care team, and you can also browse our current clinical trials online. They will provide insights into ongoing trials, potential benefits, and how participation aligns with your specific cardiac needs.
  • What ongoing support and follow-up care is available for patients after cardiac surgery?
Stamford Health offers comprehensive support and follow-up care for patient’s post-cardiac surgery. Our cardiac rehabilitation program, which offers support for several qualifying heart conditions, plays a crucial role in long-term recovery. Regular follow-up appointments with your care team ensure continued monitoring and support for your heart health journey.
