What To Expect After Delivery

Now that your baby is here, you and your new addition will move to the maternity unit. During your stay, we encourage you to “room in” with your baby in our private suites. An OB-GYN and pediatrician will visit daily, while nurses care for you and your baby.

In routine deliveries, mothers who deliver vaginally can expect a stay of two days, and some may even be able to go home sooner. Those who deliver via C-section stay three days. Complicated births may require longer stays.

Postpartum FAQs

  • What postpartum care and support does Stamford Health offer?
At Stamford Health, we offer comprehensive postpartum care and support. Our services include lactation consultants, educational resources on newborn care, breastfeeding guidance, postpartum wellness, and emotional support. We're dedicated to providing the care and assistance needed during the postpartum period.
  • What can you anticipate after giving birth, including length of stay and care in the maternity unit?
After giving birth, mothers can anticipate personalized care in our maternity unit. Our private suites provide a comfortable and supportive environment for you and your newborn. You’ll receive expert care, including assistance with breastfeeding, pain management, and postpartum education. Our health care team is here to ensure a smooth transition for you and your family.
  • How does the “room in” concept work in your private suites, and what are the benefits for parents and newborns?
Our “room in” concept allows parents and newborns to stay together in the same private suite. This promotes bonding and provides a nurturing environment. It facilitates breastfeeding, allows for continuous care and monitoring, and supports family-centered care.
  • Could you provide an estimate of the typical duration of stay for mothers who deliver vaginally and via C-section, and any variations for complicated births?
The typical duration of stay can vary based on the type of birth. For mothers who deliver vaginally, the average hospital stay is 24-48 hours. In the case of a C-section, the stay is usually around 72 hours. For complicated births, the duration of stay will depend on the individual circumstances and the mother’s and baby’s well-being. Stamford Hospital discharges patients in the morning.
  • What is the visitation policy at Stamford Hospital for the Labor & Delivery and Maternity Units?
Stamford Health recognizes how important visitors are to our patients and their recovery process. We have a patient-directed visitation policy, which means that visitors are welcome according to the patient’s wishes.

During the labor and delivery process, the patient can have two care partners (spouse, family member, etc.) present in their room. A doula (who must provide certification documentation) may be present in addition to the two designated care partners. Our waiting room space on our Hollander Family Birthing Center is limited and frequently reaches capacity. If the waiting room is at capacity, we welcome visitors to wait in the main hospital atrium or cafeteria. Once the patient has moved to The Hackett Family Maternity Unit, they will be able to welcome you in their private room.
