Stamford Health’s Breast Center Reaccredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers

STAMFORD, CT, February 11, 2021 – Stamford Health’s Breast Center has once again been granted a full, three-year accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. In 2009, Stamford Health was the first site in the nation to be accredited by the NAPBC, and was reaccredited in 2012, 2015 and 2018.

“It is our mission to offer the highest quality of breast care, delivered by a team of compassionate, expert clinicians and staff. This reaccreditation is a tremendous representation of our team’s endless hard work and dedication,” said Dr. Moira O’Riordan, Co-Director of the Stamford Health Breast Center and Director of Women’s Imaging. “I would like to personally thank all of my colleagues for not only making this recognition a reality, but also for following strict safety protocols set in place during COVID-19 so that women didn’t have to forego or postpone their care.”

ccreditation by the NAPBC is given only to those centers that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality breast care and undergoing a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. A breast center that achieves NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease.

“Our team is amazing and together, we work hard to provide the best care to our patients. That’s why we’re always evaluating processes and programs to make sure that we exceed the NAPBC’s standards,” said Dr. Helen A. Pass, Co-Director of the Stamford Health Breast Center and Chief of Breast Surgery. “In 2009, we set a national benchmark as the first-ever NAPBC accredited site. Our patients have come to know and appreciate that they’ll receive care at Stamford Health that is held to the highest of standards, right in their own community.”

The NAPBC accreditation challenges breast centers to enhance the care they provide by addressing patient-centered needs and measuring the quality of the care they deliver against national standards. During the survey process, the Breast Center demonstrated compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating all patients across the full spectrum of breast disease. These standards include proficiency in the areas of: center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement. Additionally, the Breast Center received three best practice citations including one for the High Risk Breast Program. This program identifies women at higher risk of developing breast cancer and creates a personalized surveillance program, increasing the likelihood of early detection and better outcomes.

The NAPBC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to the improvement of the quality of care and monitoring of outcomes of patients with breast diseases. This mission is pursued through standard-setting, scientific validation, and patient and professional education. Receiving care at a NAPBC-accredited center, such as Stamford Health, ensures that a patient will have access to comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services and the latest technology; a multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options; information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options; and quality breast care close to home. The NAPBC board membership includes professionals from multiple national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of breast care.
